RELATED PATENT APPLICATION
[001] This application claims the priority benefit pursuant to Article 8 PCT of Provisional Patent Application No. US 62/545,122 filed August 14, 2017, the contents of which are incorporated by reference into this document in its entirety. TECHNOLOGICAL FIELD
[002] This disclosure relates to firearms and their sights, and more specifically to firearms to which optical sights can be attached. FUNDAMENTALS
[003] Firearms are usually equipped with a fixed sight, usually a front sight (aim mass) and a rear sight (a sighting strap). On handguns, such as self-loading pistols, a bolt slides from the front of the pistol over the barrel to the rear of the pistol over the chassis, and moves when the weapon fires, sliding back right after firing and then sliding forward to accommodate a new ammo and reset the fire control system.
[004] In recent years, optical weapon sights have been improved through developments such as reductions in size, weight and energy efficiency, to the point that it is now practical to affix them to the bolt of self-loading pistols, in addition to other types of weapons. of fire. The user's ability to hit a target depends in part on the user's ability to aim accurately. Improved weapon sights can improve the user's ability to aim when the weapon is fired.
[005] These improved scopes include reflective or holographic scopes. They use a lens and projected light to produce a red dot or other aiming indicator superimposed on an image of the target visible in the optical viewfinder that indicates where a bullet would hit the target if the weapon fired at that moment. Target does not have a red dot; the crosshair makes it appear in the viewfinder.
[006] Optical sights can be used with pistols by mounting them on the bolt. Due to the fact that the bolt moves after firing and does so quickly, the attachment of the optical sight to the bolt must be secure. Some short guns have an optical sight in place of the rear sight, and the integral nature of this type of attachment helps ensure a secure connection.
[007] Some handguns provide a location for attaching a specific optical sight. Here, too, the attachment type, although designed for detachability, is still relatively safe because the weapon is given a detachable optical sight in particular.
[008] In addition, a gunsmith can be hired to modify an existing pistol to receive a specific optical sight.
[009] As improvements in optical sight technology continue and better sights become available, a system is needed that allows owners to mount improved optical sights that may be available from different manufacturers to the user's pistol and do so from securely.
[0010] A common solution to this need is the use of a "cut" or flat area formed on the upper surface of a gun bolt that receives an adapter plate. An adapter plate corresponds to an optical sight and provides the interface for the pistol to receive this optical sight. A different adapter plate is required to adapt a different optical sight to this gun. The screws secure the optical sight to the adapter plate and the bolt below it. This method offers versatility but lacks the security of a direct mount solution and places the optical sight higher above the bolt than a direct mount solution, making co-witness with existing sights difficult.
[0011] A better way to detachably attach a replacement optical sight to the bolts of automatic pistols would be an advantage. SUMMARY
[0012] According to its main aspects and reciters briefly, a system is disclosed in this document to allow an optical sight to be detachably attached to the bolt of a pistol or other firearm. The present system offers the versatility of the adapter plate without losing the security and low positioning of a direct mount solution. This versatility can allow for continued use of existing sights with alternative sighting systems.
[0013] A feature of the disclosure is a pistol bolt with a top surface having a first portion and a second portion. The first and second portions are defined by a step lowered from the first portion relative to the second portion. Adapter cards are provided as part of the system. Either adapter card will fit into the second part. The adapter plate is shaped to complement the shape of the second portion so that the adapter plate fits into the second portion in a predetermined manner and orientation. The adapter plate also has a first configuration on its upper surface that corresponds to a second configuration on the lower surface of a specific optical sight. To use a different optical sight, a different adapter plate that corresponds to the different optical sight is used. The optical sight is fixed directly and in contact with the first part of the bolt using fasteners. A portion of the optical sight extends over the second portion, thus modifying the portion of the optical sight that contains a second configuration on its lower surface to engage a first complementary configuration of the upper surface of the adapter plate when that adapter plate is positioned on the second portion of the upper surface of the bolt. If a different optical sight is used, a matching adapter plate can be combined with the gun bolt so that the bottom of the chosen different optical sight can mate with the corresponding adapter plate and be secured directly to the gun.
[0014] Another feature of the disclosure is that the first portion of said top surface is larger than said second portion.
[0015] Yet another feature of the disclosure is that the first portion has at least one attachment point and the optical sight has at least one corresponding attachment point, so that at least one fastener affixes the optical sight directly to the first portion of the upper surface the firearm and not through an adapter plate.
[0016] A feature of the disclosure is that the adapter plate has a thickness no thicker than the height of the step between the second portion and the first portion and therefore allows a spring to be placed between the second portion and the bottom of the plate adapter. The lower surface of the adapter plate or the surface of the second portion, or both, may have complementary features formed therein to receive and retain a spring.
[0017] A feature of the disclosure is that the first portion may have a shape that complements the shape of the optical sight to be attached to it, such as a curved or flat shape.
[0018] Another feature of the disclosure is that the first configuration of the top surface of the adapter plate may comprise at least one mounting feature.
[0019] These and other features and their advantages will be evident to those skilled in firearms from a careful reading of the Detailed Description, accompanied by the following drawings.
[0020] Unless defined otherwise, all technical and/or scientific terms used in this document have the same meaning as commonly understood by one of ordinary skill in the art to which this invention belongs. [0028] Disclosed in this document is a firearm adapted to receive any of several different optical sights, which can be interchangeably fixed and directly on the top surface of the firearm.
[0029] Now, referring to the Figures, the firearm may be a pistol 10, as shown, or another type of firearm. An optical sight 30 is a sighting device for use in pistol sight 10.
[0030] The optical sight 30 is attached directly to the upper surface 14 of the pistol 10 for a more secure attachment than when the optical sight 30 is attached to the upper surface of the pistol 10 via an adapter plate. As disclosed in this document, an adapter plate 58 is selected for optical sight 30 which allows direct attachment of optical sight 30 to top surface 14 and, with the use of adapter plate 58, will align that specific optical sight 30 with gun 10. In addition Furthermore, the optical sight 30 is coupled in a way that can allow the pre-existing open sights on pistol 10 and sight 30 to be simultaneous. Concurrent means that the rear sight 26, when aligned with the front sight 22, lines up with the optical sight 30 to indicate where the bullet will hit the target. Simultaneous has the effect of corroborating the user's aim.
[0031] The pistol 10, as shown in Figure 1, when held in an orientation by a user for firing, includes the bolt 18 with the upper surface 14 and wherein the bolt 18 is swinging. The forward end of the bolt 18, i.e. the end away from the user holding the pistol 10 in the hand as if to shoot, carries the front sight 22; the rear end of the bolt 18 carries the rear sight 26. The front sight 22 and rear sight 26 are therefore on the upper surface 14 of the bolt 18 of the pistol 10. The optical sight 30 is attached to the upper surface 14 of the bolt 18, between the front sight 22 and the rear sight 26. Therefore, the rear sight 26 does not need to be removed to install the optical sight 30.
[0032] As seen in Figure 2, the upper surface 14 has a first portion 34 and, as seen in Figure 3, a second adjacent portion 38, which are adjacent portions of the upper surface 14 of the bolt 18. The optical sight 30 passes through the first portion 34 and second portion 38, as seen in Figure 1.
[0033] A portion of a lower surface 74 of the optical sight 30, as seen in Figure 1, is attached to the upper surface 14 of the bolt 18 in the first portion 34 and the remaining portion of the lower surface 74 is cantilevered over the second portion 38. The first portion 34 conforms to the shape of the lower surface portion 74 of the optical sight 30. The first portion 34 of the upper surface has at least one attachment point formed thereon and the optical sight 30 also has at least one corresponding attachment point. formed in it. An attachment point is a location on the first portion 34 and a corresponding attachment point is a location on the optical sight 30. An attachment point and the corresponding attachment point may be aligned and pre-drilled holes. At least one fastener is used to secure each attachment point on the optical sight to a corresponding attachment point on the first portion 34. The optical sight 30 can be secured to the first portion 34 using screws 46, for example.
[0034] As best seen by comparing Figure 2 or Figure 3 with Figure 5, two screws 46 are inserted into two pre-drilled and threaded screw holes 50 in the optical sight 30 (Figure 5) that align with the pre-threaded holes -perforated and threaded 52 formed in the first portion 34 (Figures 2 or 3) to receive the screws 46. The screws 46 do not pass into or through the second portion 38.
[0035] Several corresponding attachment points can be formed on the first portion. Four holes 52 are shown in Figures 2 and 3, some or all of which can be used to attach the selected optical sight 30 to the pistol 10. Different optical sights may have different attachment points, so some corresponding attachment points may not be used, depending on the optical sight 30 selected by the user.
[0036] The second portion 38 is recessed from the first portion 34 and has a shape. The word form refers to the shape of the perimeter of the second portion. Figure 3 shows an example of a shape for the second portion 38. The shape acts as a key for receiving and orienting an adapter plate 58. The tier 62 defines the boundary between the first portion 34 and the second portion 38. The tier 62 (seen in Figures 1 and 3) has a height that is the difference in elevation between the second portion 38 and the first portion 34, with the second portion 38 being smaller than the first portion 34, as shown.
[0037] Adapter plate 58 is insertable into second portion 38 in the orientation that allows it to conform to the shape of adapter plate 58 in accordance with the shape of second portion 38. Adapter plate 58 is selected from a set of adapter plates 58 , all with the same shape as the second portion 38 and therefore capable of being inserted into the second portion 38 in the correct orientation.
[0038] Each adapter plate 58 has a different topography on its top surface 66 so that each is complementary to a specific optical sight 30. The word topography is used throughout this document to indicate features on top surface 66, such as mounting posts 78, best seen in Figures 4A, 4B and 4C, which are cylindrical posts. The top surface 66 topography of adapter plate 58 may alternatively have features other than those shown, including having depressions in place of mounting posts 78 and which features are selected and modeled to complement the topographic features in the lower surface 74 of the optical sight 30 The word complementary is used in this document to mean that the topographical features on the adapter plate 58 are designed to engage the topographical features on the lower surface 74 of the optical sight 30, i.e. the topographical features of one coupling with the feature of the other, of so that surfaces adjacent to topographic features engage. As an example, the mounting post 78 on the adapter plate 58 would be received in one or more mounting holes 70 in the lower surface 74 of the optical sight 30, so that the positive volume of the mounting post 78 fills the negative volume of the holes. assembly 70.
[0039] The optical sight 30 may have mounting holes 70 formed in its lower surface 74, as shown in Figure 5, which complement the mounting posts 78 on the adapter plate 58 to allow the optical sight 30 to seat on the plate adapter 58 in the correct orientation and is not likely to move laterally from that orientation, but remain laterally held, positioned and oriented in gun 10.
[0040] The adapter plate 58 has a thickness, which is slightly thinner than the height of the step 62 between the first portion 34 and the second portion 38, in order to accommodate a spring as a sealing ring 82 between the second portion 38 and the adapter plate 58. The use of the sealing ring 82 provides a force against the compressive force exerted by the cantilevered portion of the optical sight 30 on the adapter plate 58 resulting from the screws 46 holding the optical sight 30 in the first portion 34 of the upper surface. 14 of bolt 18. It also reduces the relative movement of adapter plate 58 relative to top surface 14.
[0041] Furthermore, the topographies of the lower surface 74 of the sight sight 30 and the top surface 66 of the adapter plate 58, which are complementary topographies, limit the lateral movement of the sight sight 30 relative to the adapter plate 58.
[0042] The first portion 34, which is part of the upper surface 14 of the bolt 18 of the pistol 10, may not necessarily be at the same elevation as the rest of the upper surface 14, but may be smaller than other parts of the upper surface 14 (and more higher than the second portion 38). The second portion 38 is smaller than the first portion 34 because of the step 62. The first portion 34 may be flat, as shown, or curved to fully engage the lower surface of the optical sight 30. Lower the first portion 34 from the elevation of others portions of the upper surface 14 may allow the optical sight 30, when attached to the pistol 10, to be simultaneous with the existing front sight 22 and the rear sights 26 of the pistol 10.
[0043] Those skilled in the art of firearms will appreciate that many substitutions and modifications can be made to the foregoing description and accompanying drawings without departing from the spirit and scope of the present disclosure.
